Dynamic Range Day – SHOUT OUT against the Loudness Wars

Dynamic Range Day – Loudness War Protest

What is the Loudness War exactly? Music is changing and recorded music is has changed too over the last years becoming much louder and sounding worse. Why? Well I guess we should ask the record companies.

Engineers and artists are using modern technology to push the average level of recorded music up and up and up against the “brick wall” maximum level of the CD format. This results in distortion, lack of punch and a flat, two-dimensional, lifeless sound.

You can read more about the Loudness War here.

What is Dynamic Range ? Dynamic Range is a measure of how much contrast there is in music, how much light and shade, how exciting it sounds. It’s best explained on Ian Shepherd’s blog, Production Advice, here you can also read more about Dynamic Range Day and the Loudness Wars. Ian Shepherd is also the one who had the idea of the Dynamic Range Day, which is on 20th of March and if you want to support it spread the word. If you have a website you can get a banner to support it from here.

Here is a video explaining the Loudness War:

Remember! Without silence, there is no loud!

Free Reverb plugin from TC Electronic

“Every great musician deserves great reverb, and now you can have one for FREE!” that is the motto on the web page where you can download the M30 reverb plug-in from TC Electronic. The M30 Studio Reverb is a plug-in you can use in your DAW ( like Cubase, Logic, Sonar, Ableton Live, etc)  and it uses a Hall reverb algorithm.  Usualy sold for 79$ the plugin is offered free for a limited time (3 days), today is the last day you can download it for free, all you need is an e-mail adress.

TC Electronic is a Danish audio equipment manufacturer, it’s product range includes guitar effects, audio interfaces, audio software, equalisers, studio processors and computer hardware - the brand’s products are being used in professional studios around the world and by many musicians in live concerts too.
.

Get the M30 Studio Reverb plugin.

It’s being said that reverb gives “life” to  mixes so it’s important that you have a good reverb if you make music. Although there are many free reverb plugins out there, there aren’t many opportunities to try and use one for free from a brand like TC Electronic. And if you want to see what it does on a recording you can watch the video bellow, where producer & recording artist Robbie Bronnimann is testing the M30 Studio Reverb from TC Electronic.

Online Resources for Musicians

Although I haven’t updated the blog for a while I didn’t abandon it :) Being involved in other projects I didn’t had the time for sensoria.ws but I hope this will change soon.
As you can see on my Sensoria Web Space you can find here articles and stuff that I find interesting, from my field of interests which are music & audio production, guitar playing, photography and once in a while design & things related to it like web design and more. If you find these interesting for you too be sure to check the website from time to time and don’t hesitate to subscribe.

If you are a recording musician, or just want to know more about making music you should check the list of  websites that every recording musician should visit, on audiotuts.com a website with tutorials about audio production, I check them pretty often.

Here’s the article: 47 Sites Every Recording Musician Should Visit
